A Clinical Study of Serum Carcinoembryonic Antigen in the Patients with Colorectal Cancer

Abstract
Carcinoembryonic Antigen(CEA) levels were measured in the 24 patients with colorectal cancer from June, 1981 to October, 1983.
The results were as follows;
1) in the aspect of the relation of CEA levels and the clinical stages of colorectal cancer, the CEA levels correlated well parallel with the Duckes stages of colorectal cancer. The values of serum CEA in Dukes stage A were 3.15¡¾1.90 ng/ml(mean¡¾S.D.), 3.28¡¾2.06 ng/ml in stage B, 6.4¡¾4.49 ng/ml in stage C1, 8.74¡¾6.53 in stage C2.
2) The changes in serum CEA levels after surgery are shown as follows ; In Dukes stage A, the serum CEA levels were reduced by 50% after tumor resection. In Dukes stage B, the CEA levels were reduced from 3.28¡¾2.06 ng/ml to 1.53¡¾1.06 ng/ml. (0.053) Differentiation of the cell of the colorectal cancer itself did not influence significantly to the serum CEA level.
4) The mean values of serum CEA in left colon cancer were 9.36¡¾7.48 ng/ml, 2.06:1.17 ng/ml in right colon cancer, 5.82=3.04 ng/ml in rectal cancer. The serum CEA levels in the patients with the left colon cancer were higher than the right colon cancer.(0. 01(p<0.025) and the serum CEA levels in the patients with the rectal cancer were higher than the right colon cancer. (p5) In local recurrence cases, the serum CEA level elevated slowly and slightly up to the preoperative states. But in the patients with liver metastasis, the serum CEA levels were elevated abruptly and largely compared to the local recurrence ones.
